Deer Season is Before Us

Deer Season:

Ah, deer season is before us! How exciting. The bonding time, the fresh outdoors, getting back to nature, the adrenaline rush when your bullet hits the target.  It sounds amazing, refreshing exhilarating. However, this is nothing what people feel when they have just hit a deer…. With their vehicle!

The most common months for deer – vehicle hits are October and November, with December not too far behind. When you add snow into the mix, a slick covered road and a deer in your headlights can make for a disastrous outcome. If you travel to Pennsylvania often, your chance of hitting a deer in PA is 1 in 67! Those are some pretty intimidating odds.

State Farm estimated the national average cost per claim for a deer hit in 2015 was $3,995.08. If you have a $500 - $1,000 deductible, for most people that is a heavy amount of money to come up with right around the holidays.

Yes, we are a collision repair shop, but we are also concerned about the safety of our friends, family and community and want you to stay safe.

Here are a few tips on preventing a deer – vehicle collision.

  • Watch for deer crossing signs
  • Know that deer are most active at dusk (between 6pm – 9pm) and dawn
  • Use high beams as much as possible (turning off when oncoming traffic)
  • Understand that when you see 1 deer, there could very well be more
  • Wear your seatbelt always
  • Try to brake if you can, but do not swerve. Stay in your lane

If you do find yourself in a deer – vehicle collision:

  • Pull to the side of the road if you can
  • Put on your hazard lights and stay inside your vehicle
  • Do not attempt to move the deer
  • Call for help

Most importantly try to keep safe and alert on the road. Get yourself a nice buck, just not with your vehicle! Happy Deer Season to All.
